Southern Power Maintenance (SPM) took part in the China–South Africa Bilateral Session on Infrastructure Construction and Trade at the G20 Young Entrepreneurs’ Alliance (YEA) Summit, where business leaders and policymakers explored opportunities to deepen collaboration in sectors such as energy, logistics, and technology.

The panel featured representatives from both South Africa and China. From South Africa, the panel included Sydney Mabalayo of SPM; Rowen Crowie of Enza Construction; Lungi Tsotsi of Dunlop Belting Products; and Yolisa Kani from Transnet Group. Representing China were Frankey Zhang of Buffalo International Logistics; Wang Yuzhi of PowerChina East and Southern Africa; and Si Xiaowei of China Communication Construction Co Ltd, South Africa Branch.

During the session, Sydney Mabalayo, Strategy & Business Development Director at SPM, highlighted the importance of combining economic growth with long-term impact:

“There are many business opportunities arising from the collaboration between our countries. However, we need to build these opportunities in a way that equips young people and safeguards the future of our country. We need to make sure that these projects leave a legacy for the next generations.”

Discussions focused on practical collaboration opportunities, particularly in renewable energy, digital infrastructure, and power grid modernisation. Delegates also emphasised youth-focused initiatives, including training, apprenticeships, and incubation programs, alongside strategies to streamline cross-border investment and entrepreneurship.

The session underscored that sustainable bilateral cooperation must go hand in hand with youth development and legacy building, ensuring that infrastructure and trade projects contribute not only to immediate economic growth but also to long-term national development.

Reflecting on the session, Mabalayo added:

“Seeing so many leaders and innovators come together today reinforces my optimism for the future. What we do now, how we structure projects, partnerships, and support for young people, will define the opportunities for the next generation. That responsibility motivates every decision we make.”

The G20 YEA Summit continues through 22 September 2025, bringing together young entrepreneurs and policymakers from G20 member states to advance innovation, youth leadership, and international collaboration.
